PARADISE, Cochise County, Arizona - Paradise is a small town tucked away in the east side of the Chiricahua Mountains. The town got its name when a pair of newlyweds made their home in this isolated area. I don't have a date for this, but it must have been in the late 1800s. The paradise atmosphere disappeared in 1901 when a rich vein of silver was discovered nearby and miners moved into the town. At one time there were 100 people living in Paradise, which had a post office and a dance hall. Today it is once again a quiet paradise for its residents. According to one of my reference books, the late Dr. Timothy Leary, famed LSD advocate and researcher, moved to Paradise along with a group of "hippies" in November 1967. I don't know how long they lived in Paradise, but problems with the law forced them to move on. - Scenics: These were taken a few miles east of Paradise, leaving the foothills of the Chiricahua Mountains - Collared Peccary: This collared peccary (or "javelina") was one of a group of about five that were foraging on the treats that a local resident had scattered around his yard. Deer and peccaries are some of the non-human residents that are commonly seen in Paradise.
