NACO, Cochise County, Arizona - A little known piece of history about Naco is that it is the only community in the continental U.S. to have been bombed from an airplane by a foreign country. It happened in 1929 during the Topete Revolution that was taking place just across the border in Mexico. It was the federales against the rebels. Patrick Murphy, a barnstorming pilot, offered his services to the rebels to bomb the federales. The primitive bombs were hand-dropped out of the plane and several landed in Arizona. - Naco Stonehenge: Actually, this is more of the U.S. Border Station. The border station is a handsome building with some interesting architecture. My friend Judie called these structures "Naco Stonehenge." - Customs inspection: Motorists driving into the United States from Mexico must pass through this Customs inspection station. - Downtown area: Naco has a small downtown area that is largely unoccupied. However, the buildings are old and interesting. - Downtown building: These old adobe wall and brick buildings are just across this narrow street from the U.S. Border Station. This may be the old Phelps-Dodge store. If so, it was one of the unintended targets of the air attack back in 1929. - Golf course: This is the Turquoise Valley Golf Course. - San Jose Peak: San Jose Peak is in Mexico. Photo 2 is a view of both Nacos from Hwy 92 to the north. - Naco, Sonora: Photo 1 is the border station at Naco, Sonora, Mexico. We didn't cross the border into Mexico as the couple did in this photo. These photos were taken from the U.S. side.
